The Cork women’s and Schoolgirl’s Soccer league brought almost 100 players to Dublin last Sunday to watch the senior women’s international between the Republic of Ireland and Hungary.

The players were divided into groups according to age and played matches against teams from Dublin before travelling on to Tolka Park for Ireland’s opening Euro 2009 qualifier.

All the Cork teams won their respective matches against their Dublin counter parts and FAI scout picked out a number of Cork girls during these matches who they felt had a chance of making it at international level.

After watching Ireland go behind to an early Hungarian goal the Cork supporters, were soon celebrating as Katie Taylor and Susan Byrne’s goals secure victory for Noel King’s side.

After the game Irish Senior international Marie Curtin made her way into the stand to thank the Cork girl’s for making the effort to support the Irish team.

“I’d like to thank everyone from Cork who made the effort to come up, it was great to see so many young girl’s at the game.” Said Curtin.

Manager Noel King was also delighted at the level of support shown by the Cork girl’s and the result.

“We scored two great goals in the game and this win will build confidence at this initial stage of the group. The pitch didn’t lend itself to passing football so we had to adapt our game to a more direct approach but in the end, we got the three points we were looking for. It was great we got good support today and hopefully that can continue as the qualifiers go on.”

Ireland’s next game in their Euro 2009 qualifiers is against Italy in May
