Lakewood are the CWSSL Umbro Premier League champions 2009   Date: Thursday 17 September, 2009
News Summary:
A highly exciting season reached its climax last night with the meeting of the top two in the final league game in Ovens. Lakewood went into the tie two points clear of reigning champions Wilton knowing that if they avoided defeat they would end the visitors three year spell as champions.

News Content:

Wilton got off to the perfect start when they won a free kick 20 yards out after only a minute and Sinead Forde duelly dispatched it to the back of the net. Lakewood took their time settling but despite their early nerves and set back they soon got into their rythem. An attack down the left earned Lakewood a free on the edge of the box for obstruction, which saw Patrice Kearney getting book. Yvonne Cahill swung the free into the back post. Val Leahy and Louise Barrett were close to getting a touch but it mattered little as the ball crept inside the post to level the match.

Wilton suffered a big loss just before half time when Patrice Kearney received a second yellow card.

The second half was end to end, despite having only ten players Wilton had plenty of attacks with Dee Cotter working tirelessly, but they couldn’t really break through the resolute back four of Gill Cahill, Aoife Kelleher, Catherese Fahy and Caroline Mitchel and her replacement Niamh Foley.

Mid way through the second half Lakewood won a free which Yvonne Cahill played to Aoife Kelleher who crossed deep to the back post where Mairead Kelly met the ball with a powerful header and effectively wrapping up the league for Lakewood.
